Train To Win!!!
So you are looking to begin racing competitively, want to proceed to a higher level of conditioning, or just want to beat your buddies at the next sprint...heres a basic tip that works. Whatever your competition a criterium or your local ride. Train to WIN!!!
Most people are so eager to win they do not always remember to create a strong foundation in their training. It is just as important to start your conditioning correctly as it is to achieve strength, speed and endurance.
By using this training principle, you will establish a base conditioning that will allow easier assimilation of future training. To guarantee a positive foundation in your training, make sure that during the first 4 to 6 weeks of your preparation period (or start of training), you maintain all your training in Zone 2.
In other words keep your heart rate level between 65 72 maximum. To determine your maximum heart rate, the standard formula is to subtract your age from 220. To make sure that you maintain your training within these levels use a heart rate monitor. Remember, be patient, do not rush your training and you will be pleased with your ability to better achieve your goals.
